What Is A Bronze DofE Expedition?
The Bronze DofE expedition is often a young person’s first experience of independent walking, navigation and teamwork in an outdoor environment.
A typical Bronze DofE expedition involves:
-
2 days of walking as a small, self-sufficient team
-
1 night camping at an approved campsite
-
Walking a planned route while carrying personal and group equipment
-
Navigating between checkpoints using maps and compasses
Before the assessed expedition, students complete training and a practice expedition, covering essential skills such as navigation, campcraft, first aid awareness and teamwork. This ensures participants feel confident and prepared before their qualifying expedition.
During the qualifying expedition, groups walk independently while being remotely supervised by our qualified instructors supported by the use of tracker technology, in line with DofE guidance. This balance of independence and support allows young people to develop confidence, resilience and decision-making skills in a safe, well-managed setting.
Learn Outdoors works closely with schools to introduce students to expeditioning in a way that is supportive, confidence-building and age-appropriate, while still meeting the required level of challenge set by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

FAQs
Can Bronze DofE Expeditions Be Completed Locally?
Yes. Bronze expeditions are often completed close to a school, particularly in the South East.
How Difficult Is The Bronze DofE Expedition?
The Bronze expedition is designed to be a challenging but achievable first adventure.
Participants will typically:
-
Walk for around 6–7 hours per day
-
Carry a rucksack with personal and shared kit
-
Navigate using a map and compass
-
Camp overnight and cook their own meals
For many students, this is their first experience of multi-day walking and camping.
We carefully plan routes to provide the right level of challenge without being overwhelming. Where necessary, we can make sensible adjustments to support individual needs.
Does Learn Outdoors Organise Campsites?
If you choose our full expedition package, we organise all campsite bookings and expedition logistics for you.
If a school prefers to manage campsite bookings themselves, we can also provide a more flexible support package.

What Time Of Year Is Best For Bronze?
Bronze expeditions typically run between April and October.
This period offers longer daylight hours and more settled weather. However, we plan thoroughly for all conditions and always prioritise participant safety and comfort.
At Learn Outdoors, we work closely with schools to schedule expeditions around your academic calendar, key school events and exam periods.
We always aim to accommodate your preferred dates wherever possible. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing your first choice and allows plenty of time for planning, training and parent communication.
Our goal is to make the organisation process straightforward, flexible, and stress-free for schools.
